The Federal Government has released a statement which reads: “The Government and people of the Federation of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis are united in profound sorrow at the passing of former Governor-General, His Excellency Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence GCMG OBE CSM JP.”
The statement recognized his service and contributions to the nation in the fields of economics and business and the role of Governor General stating: “His leadership, clear vision, humility and profound sense of duty inspired generations of citizens and have left an indelible mark on the fabric of our nation.”
In honour of his passing, a seven-day period of national mourning will begin on Monday, September 8, 2025, during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast across all government buildings and official residences and again on the day of his funeral or memorial service until sunset.
Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, in a social media post, expressed his deep sorrow, saying, “We have lost a true statesman, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Mark Brantley shared as well: “On behalf of the Nevis Island Administration and the people of Nevis, I extend deepest condolences to his family and friends and pray that God will comfort them as they mourn his passing.”
