The Federal Cabinet has announced the State Funeral arrangements for the late former Governor-General, His Excellency Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence, GCMG, OBE, CSM, JP, who passed away on September 7th, 2025. Sir Edmund served as the third Governor-General of the Federation from 2013 to 2015 and was a pivotal figure in the nation’s development.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, October 2nd, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Wesley Methodist Church in Basseterre. A Lying-in-State ceremony will take place at Government House earlier that morning, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., allowing the public to pay their respects. A national half-holiday has been declared to allow the public to participate.

Additionally, the Government invites citizens to sign the Books of Condolence available at Government Headquarters and Government House until the funeral day.

A media release concerning the funeral arrangements concluded: “The Government and people of St. Christopher and Nevis extend deepest condolences to his wife, Lady Lawrence, his children, and the entire Lawrence family. As we prepare to bid farewell, we celebrate the life of a truly distinguished son of the soil whose contributions have left an enduring mark on our nation. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

The VON Radio idea was conceived two years earlier by BVI Nevisian resident, Mr Merrit Herbert. In the early part of 1986 I visited Nevis just after some heavy rains which had set the ghauts overflowing and made the roads impassable in some areas. a dangerous situation indeed.
