Earthquakes recorded and felt on Monday October 27th
Residents in St. Kitts and Nevis complained of feeling an earthquake sometime Monday morning (October 27th).
According to the UWI Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC), an earthquake occurred at 8:38 a.m. Its location was 264 KM, East South East of St. John’s Antigua and 222 KM, East of Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, with Latitude 16.50 North and Longitude 59.55 West at a Magnitude of 6.7.
Then nine minutes later, a second quake, a 5.2 in strength was recorded around the same area, 267 KM East South East of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda and 227 KM East of Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe.
A number of aftershocks were recorded thereafter within the same location, a 3.7 at 9:07am, 4.0 at 9:15am, 5.4 at 9:26am, 4.2 at 9:52am, 3.8 at 10:36am, a 3.5 at 11:28 am, seven minutes after, a 3.6 was recorded and at 12:37pm a 4.2 was recorded.
The UWI SRC later issued a Statement which said: “it continues to monitor the area and Seismic Technicians will be manually posting events from the area of concern.” It also added that “aftershocks were expected to continue and will update the interactive map on its website accordingly”.
