During the course of the first full week of January 2026 (Jan. 4th to 10th), the Low Ground landfill on Nevis, emitted smoke.

It affected surrounding communities for days. But what really caused this and when will this end?

The VONNEWSLINE spoke with the General Manager of the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Marva Frith, who said (quote): “the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority is aware of the ongoing fire and smoke concerns at the Lowground landfill. The matter is actively under investigation and thus a cause cannot be presumed at this time.” End quote.

She added “in the meantime, our priority is public safety, containment, and reducing smoke impact on surrounding communities. At this point, it would be premature to give a precise timeline, but we will continue to issue regular updates and provide a timeline as soon as it is responsibly possible to do so.”

Ms. Frith mentioned “following the investigation, we will implement strengthened prevention measures guided by the finding. These may include but not limited to enhanced monitoring, tighter site controls and reinforced operational practices.”
