A new national holiday has been approved by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis (Federal Government). From January 28th 2027 and onward, January 28th will be observed annually as a national holiday, to commemorate the historic Buckley’s Uprising.
The main objective of the revolt was for workers to receive the financial compensation they felt were due to them for the work done. The event was a pivotal part of the federation’s history as just about every estate on St. Kitts was affected by the strike with some decided to walk for their rights and many refusing to work. Three persons died and several were injured.
The major national announcement was shared with the public by Minister of Public Infrastructure et al., and elected representative for St. Christopher #3, Hon. Konris Maynard, during the 91st Anniversary Commemoration of the Buckley’s Uprising, held on January 28th at Buckley’s Estate, St. Kitts.
Speaking at the ceremony, he confirmed that the Cabinet led by Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew has approved the necessary process to formally designate January 28 as a national holiday. Prime Minister Drew noted the announcement as both timely and necessary.
