The long-awaited reconstruction of Basseterre High School has entered an active phase, with the first shipment of foundation materials now en route from Barbados.

Prime Minister, Dr. Terrance Drew confirmed construction is underway, marking a major step in restoring the historic institution that has shaped generations of leaders, professionals, and educators.

Under the previous Unity-led Administration (2015-2022), the initial plan was to rebuild a new Basseterre High School. However, the school’s faculty, staff and students were moved to a new location, in Taylor’s Range, which in the first instance was understood to be temporary.

Demolition of structures occurred in December 2023, under the present SKNLP-led administration, followed by design and site preparation. Large-scale excavation began in June 2025, and precast concrete components are being manufactured in Barbados. Press Secretary, Javon Liburd had this to say:

Construction is expected to take just under two years.
