National Debate Underway on Raising Age of Consent and Marriage

A nationwide conversation is unfolding in St. Kitts and Nevis as the government considers rising the age of sexual consent and marriage from 16 to 18, an issue that has resurfaced after earlier attempts dating back to 2008.
Through town halls, school visits, media discussions and online surveys, citizens and residents have the opportunity to weigh in on the proposal. The St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association has been central to these consultations, helping to capture youth perspectives on what many describe as a gap between adolescence and legal adulthood.
Feedback gathered during this process is expected to directly inform upcoming legislation. Officials have indicated that public concerns ranging from protection against exploitation to sex education and enforcement will be used to refine the bill before it reaches Parliament. Consultations are scheduled to run through April, after which the legislative process is expected to begin.
