The Ministry of Agriculture on Nevis has launched its 14th annual Agriculture Awareness Month which was first launched in 2013. Nevis’ Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. Eric Evelyn spoke about this year’s theme:
It was highlighted that there is a crucial need for climate-smart practices and greater use of technology to boost crop and livestock production while protecting marine resources that sustain livelihoods.
The month features several activities, including a Sweet Potato Weevil Management Workshop in collaboration with CARDI on May 13th and Enhancement Works at the Memorial Square in Charlestown from May 18th to 22nd.
On May 20th, a Small Ruminant Management Workshop will be held alongside a Vet and Livestock Division Open House. Additional events include Fruit Tree and Seedling Distribution from May 26th to 29th, and farmers and gardeners can benefit from discounted bio-stimulants and selected seeds available from May 6th to 29th. For details, the Ministry can be contacted at 469-5521 ext. 6511.
Persons are encouraged to support local agriculture by increasing consumption of locally grown produce, as part of a broader push to enhance food security and economic resilience.
