Student ambassadors from the St. Thomas’ Primary School on Nevis shared key Tsunami preparedness information during the latest edition of the “Youth on the Go” Programme on VON Radio.

Grade Six students Akima Williams and Aiden Averil explained how residents should respond before, during, and after a Tsunami. They highlighted the sudden retreat of seawater from the shoreline as a critical warning sign and urged the public to move immediately to higher ground rather than pause to observe or record footage.

The students also emphasized the importance of household preparedness, encouraging families to develop emergency plans, map evacuation routes, and assemble emergency kits containing water, food, medication, flashlights, batteries, and first-aid supplies. They further warned that tsunami waves often arrive in multiple surges and advised people not to return to coastal areas until the official clearance is given.

The programme also featured a contractor from the International Tsunami Information Center, Caribbean Office, Kimberly MaisonetGonzalez, who underscored the importance of continuous public education on tsunami risk across the Caribbean. She stressed that preparedness must reach all ages, including children, and reinforced her message with the story of 10-year-old Tilly Smith:
