St. Kitts and Nevis has achieved a historic milestone in science and innovation with the successful launch of its first space-based research experiment aboard the SSC SubOrbital Express S1X-5/M17 mission from Estrange Space Center in Sweden on May 31st, 2026.

The project, a collaboration between the Nevis Island Administration’s Ministry of Education, the University of Zurich, and the Center for Space and Aviation Switzerland and Liechtenstein (CSA), marks the first scientific experiment from the Caribbean region conducted in space. The mission investigates how altered gravity affects gene regulation and genome architecture in human immune cells, research with implications for astronaut health during long-duration space missions.

A standout feature of the initiative is that key flight hardware was designed and built locally in Nevis by teachers, students, and technical experts, reflecting years of investment in STEM education and scientific capacity building. The partnership also led to the establishment of a cell culture laboratory at the Charlestown Secondary School and Nevis Sixth Form College.

Beyond its scientific goals, the project significantly expands Nevis’ access to advanced research infrastructure, international expertise, and training opportunities in space, life sciences and integrates the federation into the emerging “New Space Economy,” enabling long-term participation in international research networks and innovation ecosystems.
