Political Leaders of St. Kitts and Nevis (both past and present) delivered remarks at a Special Sitting of the Nevis Island Assembly, at the Assembly’s Chambers in Charlestown on Friday, July 31st, 2020 which was held to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the MV Christena disaster.
On August 1st 1970, the MV Christena, an inter-island ferry which operated between Basseterre and Charlestown, sank on its way to Charlestown in an area known as Nag’s Head and resulted in 233 persons losing their lives.
Former Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) and only living National Hero, Dr. the Right Excellent and Right Honourable, Sir Kennedy Simmonds, who was the only medical doctor on Nevis at the time of the disaster, spoke of his experience:

On Saturday August 1st, a Memorial Service was held to pay tribute to those that died on the MV Christena Disaster.
