The St. Kitts Tourism Authority, in collaboration with private sector partners, has expanded the island’s dive tourism product with the sinking of a decommissioned aircraft offshore to create a new artificial reef.

The aircraft was submerged on April 23rd, 2026, near the well-known Talata Wreck off Potato Bay, a site already popular with divers. Officials say the addition is expected to enhance the underwater landscape and further position St. Kitts as a leading Caribbean dive destination.

Prior to deployment, the aircraft, formerly located at Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, underwent extensive environmental preparation to ensure compliance with marine safety standards and to safeguard aquatic ecosystems.

Artificial reefs are purpose-built structures placed on the seafloor to replicate natural reef environments. They provide shelter, feeding grounds, and breeding habitats for marine life, supporting biodiversity and long-term ocean health.

Officials say the initiative reflects a growing focus on sustainable tourism development, combining environmental stewardship with economic opportunity while strengthening the island’s appeal to both visiting and local dive enthusiasts.a
