Akilah Byron-Nisbett resigns from PLP, says party “strayed away from its core principles”

Akilah Byron-Nisbett announced on Friday Mar. 24th 2023, her resignation from the People’s Labour Party (PLP). The announcement was made during a statement she shared on her Facebook page:

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mrs. Byron-Nisbett served as the Party’s Deputy Leader. She also served as Senator and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from 2016 to 2020. In the 2020 Federal Elections, Mrs. Byron-Nisbett ran on PLP’s ticket as a Candidate for Constituency Three (3) West Basseterre and won that seat, becoming its Parliamentary Representative. At that time, she became the Minister of Health, Information and Communications Technology ICT, Entertainment, Entrepreneurship and Talent Development, in the Team Unity Administration.

 

 

 

In 2022, following the collapse of the Team Unity coalition and the snap General Elections in August of that year, the coalition was defeated by the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), after winning 6 of the 8 seats in St. Kitts, to form the Government. SKNLP’s Konris Maynard defeated Mrs. Byron-Nisbett with 1,747-720 votes. In spite of the above-mentioned, Mrs. Byron-Nisbett said:
