Minister responsible for Disaster Management in the Nevis Island Administration, Hon. Spencer Brand, is urging residents to take hurricane preparedness seriously as the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season gets underway.

In an address marking the start of the season on June 1st, Minister Brand emphasized that while forecasts suggest a less active season, Nevis must remain prepared because it only takes one storm to cause significant damage.

According to the outlook, the Minister said, there is a 55 percent chance of a below-normal season, a 35 percent chance of a near-normal season, and a 10 percent chance of an above normal season.

Forecasters predict between eight and fourteen named storms, including three to six hurricanes and up to three major hurricanes.

Minister Brand urged families to prepare household emergency plans, assemble go-bags, review evacuation routes, and identify the nearest emergency shelter.

He also encouraged businesses to strengthen contingency plans and farmers to protect livestock, irrigation systems, and crops.

He said Nevis will continue to focus on early warning, community preparedness, and coordinated emergency response throughout the hurricane season.

Meanwhile, the Nevis Christian Council and the Nevis Evangelical Association, in collaboration with the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD), are inviting the public to an Ecumenical Service marking the start of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The service will be held on Tuesday June 2nd, at 7:00 p.m. at the Wesleyan Holiness Church in Cotton Ground, Nevis, under the theme: “Why Will We Fear When God Is Ever Near?”
