Did the gun amnesty yield any success?

Were any guns surrendered during the Gun Amnesty period in St. Kitts-Nevis? What is the status?

Those questions were posed to the police on Friday May 24th. On May 9th 2024, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. Terrance Drew, announced, a gun amnesty for the Federation, for the period May 10th to the 25th, during a sitting of the National Assembly.

It came following weeks of crime-related incidents including (robberies and murders). A gun amnesty allows persons to surrender unregistered or unwanted firearms to police without any action being taken in relation to possession offences.

Has anyone whether on Nevis, or St. Kitts, turned in their guns? A representative from the Ministry of National Security, told the VONNEWSLINE “we will provide a report at the end of the process.”

Interested persons were asked to take their firearms to any police station or seek out an attorney, in order to surrender the item. The identity of the individual (s) will not be disclosed according to PM Drew. The amnesty ended at 11:59pm on Saturday May 25th.
