A new chapter in the history of the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) will begin on July 9th, 2026, when the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) unveils its redesigned family of banknotes and coins. A significant change in the design is that it will no longer feature the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

It will instead feature regional figures. Notably the EC Two Dollar Note is the first denomination of the currency that does not feature the Queen. It instead features legendary Antiguan cricketer Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander “Viv” Richards.

Ahead of the highly anticipated reveal, an ECCB official said the new currency was shaped by extensive public consultations conducted between 2023 and 2024. Deputy Governor of the ECCB, Dr. Valda Henry, spoke about the significance of removing the British Monarch:

Replicas of the full family of notes and coins will be showcased during the unveiling ceremony, with the first set of banknotes expected to enter circulation in 2027.

The unveiling forms part of celebrations marking 50 years of the EC dollar’s peg to the US dollar, a milestone the ECCB says highlights the currency’s enduring stability and resilience across the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union.
