Fort Thomas Hotel to Be Transformed into Museum of Caribbean History
Fort Thomas Hotel to Be Transformed into Museum of Caribbean History
The government of St. Kitts and Nevis is nearing the final stages of negotiations to redevelop the historic Fort Thomas Hotel property in Fortlands, Basseterre, St. Kitts into a world-class Museum of Caribbean History.
The project aims to revitalize the long-neglected site by transforming it into a major cultural and tourism destination featuring the museum, restaurants, public spaces, and monuments celebrating regional heritage.
An Environmental Impact Assessment has already been completed and an archaeologist will be assigned to the project to ensure any historical artifacts are preserved and potentially displayed. The development will follow a lease-to-own model, allowing the developer to purchase the site only after the successful completion of the museum and delivery of public amenities.
Additionally, the project includes coastal erosion stabilization to protect the Fortlands shoreline and preserve the site’s structural integrity. Owned by the Government since 1999, the Fort Thomas property has suffered decades of deterioration. This initiative represents a major step toward restoring its historical and cultural value. The Government is committed to a transparent, public-interest-driven approach and views the project as a nationally significant investment for St. Kitts and Nevis and the wider Caribbean. Further updates will follow as negotiations conclude.
