The Federal Minister of Labour provided an update on discussions surrounding the status of the minimum wage in St. Kitts & Nevis.
Hon. Marsha Henderson, while in the National Assembly on March 7th, told the nation that it will be increased “again under a Labour Government.” SKN’s minimum wage, which stands at $9 per hour or $360 per week for 40 hours of work, was implemented in 2014. But with almost a decade passed and no increase in the minimum wage, what has been done over the years?
A Minimum Wage Advisory Committee was formed under the-then Team Unity Administration in 2018 and is comprised of persons representing the government, the private sector, and civil society, which is in accordance with the Labour Minimum Wage Act Chapter 18.19. That Committee submitted a report to the Government in 2019. What is the current status? Can citizens and residents expect an increase in the minimum wage?
