Ground Breaking Ceremony held Dec. 10th for Basseterre Valley Solar Storage Project

The ground breaking ceremony for Basseterre Valley Solar Project “the largest Solar Generation Plus Energy Storage project ever to be built in the Caribbean” took place at the Needmust Power Station in St. Kitts, December 10th 2020.

The Basseterre Valley Solar project will be the site of the Leclanché Solar Farm, a 35.6 MW Solar Energy plant and 44.2 MWh Battery Storage facility provided by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis which will be housed at the current SKELEC Power Station situated at Needmust on St. Kitts.

According to Leclanché Energy Storage Solution, “the solar farm will provide the residents… with a reliable and renewable clean energy source with fixed cost savings compared to the current diesel-generated power system.

The system will provide between 25-30% of the nation’s current power generation needs, while displacing the same amount of diesel-generated capacity.”

Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris made these comments at the ground breaking ceremony with regards to the future benefits of the solar project:
