The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has defended its recent decision to deny entry to seventeen Nigerian nationals arriving on regional airline flights, stating that the move was taken on the advice of health authorities amid heightened global concern over Ebola.

Officials emphasized that the measure “was not taken lightly,” but was implemented in line with “our national responsibility to protect public health during a period of heightened global concern regarding Ebola.” The government referenced guidance from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which has identified Nigeria as being at high risk of Ebola importation following a “dynamic risk assessment related to ongoing transmission in parts of Africa and the movement of persons through major transport hubs.”

While acknowledging that Nigeria has not reported confirmed local cases linked to the current outbreak, authorities said the advisory warranted “heightened caution and preparedness.” They also reaffirmed diplomatic goodwill, stating that Saint Kitts and Nevis “has always valued its warm and respectful relationship with the people of Nigeria.”

The statement added that the country remains “a welcoming nation,” while stressing the need to act with “caution, responsibility, and in accordance with health guidance.” Officials expressed regret for any disruption caused and urged full compliance with national laws as they continue managing the public health system.
