Importation of T-shirt Shopping Bags Officially Banned

Tuesday December 31st, 2024, marked the official ban on the importation of t-shirt shopping bags in St. Kitts and Nevis. It forms part of a national initiative on the banning of single use plastics that will end on November 30th, 2025. This ban entails three main phases:

 

Phase 1 now in motion with the ban on the importation of t-shirt shopping bags, as of December 31st, 2024, will end on March 31st, 2025 where the distribution and sale of such items will be prohibited.

 

On April 30th 2025, phase 2, Styrofoam food containers, and plastic straws will no longer be imported. These single use plastics should no longer be distributed or sold after July 31st 2025.

 

The final phase beginning August 31st 2025, the importation of single use plastic cups, utensils, and plates will be capped and on November 30th, the distribution and sale of these items will be restricted.

 

The Department of Environment in St. Kitts, stated via social media, “We’re taking a bold step toward a greener, sustainable future. Let’s protect our oceans, safeguard our wildlife, and reduce pollution for generations to come.”

 

They continued, “Be proud—you are part of a nation leading the charge against plastic waste.”
