The Ministry of Health in St. Kitts and Nevis has issued a public health advisory warning that Saharan dust is currently affecting air quality across the islands, urging residents to take precautions until conditions improve.
The advisory highlights that young children, older adults, and individuals with asthma, allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or heart conditions are at heightened risk of complications. Officials noted that exposure to airborne dust may trigger coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, as well as irritation of the eyes and throat.
Residents are being advised to stay indoors whenever possible and to limit outdoor activity during periods of heavy dust. Those who must go outside are encouraged to wear properly fitted protective masks, such as KN95 respirators. The Ministry also recommends improving indoor air quality through the use of HEPA filters or air purifiers where available.
Individuals with respiratory conditions are urged to keep prescribed medications readily accessible and to use them as directed. Health officials stressed the importance of monitoring official updates and seeking medical attention if symptoms worsen, particularly in cases of difficulty breathing.
