The Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) will host a Faith-Based Geophysical Hazards Symposium later this month. According to the Nevis Island Administration, the event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:35 p.m. at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park.
The symposium marks the culmination of the first phase of the department’s Multi-Hazard Awareness Calendar and will be held under the theme “Faith, Science, and Preparedness: Strengthening Community Resilience to Geophysical Hazards.”
Over the past four months, the department has partnered with schools and churches across Nevis to raise awareness about earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, and volcanic activity.
Officials say the upcoming symposium will bring together faith leaders, educators, disaster officials, and regional and international partners to deepen public understanding of these hazards and promote practical preparedness measures.
The programme will include presentations linking faith and hazard awareness, disaster communication strategies, and a technical presentation from the UWI Seismic Research Centre.
There will also be an interactive question and answer session with the public. The department says the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community resilience by integrating faith-based organizations into disaster communication and response systems.
