The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis is advancing efforts to build a more people-centred justice system through a Restorative Justice and Criminal Mediation Training Programme being held this week at Koi Resort. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Hon. Garth Wilkin explained the role of restorative justice and mediation in addressing conflict and harm within communities:

The June 8th to 11th, training programme is hosted by the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and facilitated by the British Society of Mediators. Participants include police officers, probation officers, social workers, child protection professionals and other justice-sector stakeholders.

Wilkin said while enforcement, accountability and public safety remain essential, countries are increasingly recognizing the value of addressing the root causes of conflict and offending behaviour through rehabilitation and dialogue:

The Attorney General noted that the Federation is developing a national restorative justice framework and other community-based initiatives aimed at strengthening accountability, supporting victims and building safer communities.
