The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis assumed the Presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Escazú Agreement during its Fourth Meeting (COP4), held in The Bahamas from April 21–24, 2026, marking a significant leadership role in advancing environmental governance across Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Escazú Agreement, the region’s first legally binding treaty on environmental matters, promoted access to environmental information, public participation in decision-making, access to justice, and the protection of environmental defenders.
Upon assuming the presidency, Saint Kitts and Nevis reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening transparency, regional cooperation, and inclusive environmental governance, while highlighting the existential threat climate change posed to Small Island Developing States.
The federation was represented by the Federal Director of Environment Derrione Edmeade.
COP4 concluded with the approval of 10 key decisions, including the establishment of working groups on pollutant release and environmental justice, as well as guidelines to support national implementation road maps. The meeting also confirmed Saint Kitts and Nevis as Chair of the COP Presidency, alongside The Bahamas, Belize, Colombia, and Panama as Vice-Chairs, and sets COP5 for April 2028.
