SKN joins the rest of the world in celebration of Earth Day

“Invest In our Planet”  that is the theme for Earth Day 2022.

Traditionally celebrated on Friday, April 22nd 2022, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

To commemorate the day’s observance, the Department of Environment held a Clean-up activity at Fort Ashby in St. Thomas’ Parish, Nevis, spearheaded by Miriam Knorr and the Biodiversity Committee.

This activity according to the department served to launch the “Restoration of Nevis Wetlands” Project which is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture U.S. Forest Service, as part of their Natural Infrastructure for Caribbean Resilience (NICaR) Programme.

The main goals of the project are to restore and conserve the area from Nelson’s Spring in the south to Fort Ashby in the north as a natural wetland area.

Funding for this project is also being supplemented by IWECO for Nelson’s Spring, which the department is implementing in conjunction with the St. Thomas’ Improvement Group.
