Through its Multiple-Hazard Campaign, May is Drought Awareness Month.
According to the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD), there are three (3) main types of droughts that can impact our island, namely:
Meteorological Drought, Hydrological Drought and Agricultural Drought.
Meteorological Drought is a period of much lower-than-normal rainfall.
Hydrological Drought is a drop in water levels, such as rivers, reservoirs, and groundwater.
Agricultural Drought are dry conditions that can affect crop growth and soil moisture.
According to the Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum (CARICOF), the Caribbean is in its dry season. Currently, there are drought watches for The Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Central and Western Cuba, northwest Puerto Rico and the USVI and a moderate to short term drought for parts of St. Croix, St. Barts and St. Maarten.
The NDMD is also inviting the public to stay alert for safety tips, and preparedness information all month long via its social media platforms.
