Three Bills Passed into Law in Latest National Assembly
A Sitting of the National Assembly of St. Kitts and Nevis was held on Thursday July 24th, 2025 where three bills were read and passed into law.
The bills passed were the Larceny (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Judge Alone Trials (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Gang (Prohibition and Prevention) (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The Larceny Bill sets up different levels of punishment for robbery offences depending on how violent the act was, whether threats were used, and the use of weapons.
The changes made in the Judge Alone Trials (Amendment) Bill, 2025, seek to ensure clarity, fairness and accountability when judge alone trials are utilized. Key changes include: giving judges the authority to reject trials if they jeopardize justice or the public good while serious offenses like attempted murder and intentional shooting are now the main emphasis of the revised Schedule.
The Gang (Prohibition and Prevention) (Amendment) Bill, 2025, aims to combat gang violence and strengthen the existing legal framework by expanding definitions, increasing penalties, introducing new offences, and clarifying procedures. It also introduces new terms and broadens the evidentiary framework. The bill aims to deter violence and protect those who can still be saved, with initiatives like the ELEVATE Programme and Explorers Clubs.
Meantime – Another Sitting of the National Assembly will be held at the National Assembly Chambers, Government Headquarters, Basseterre, St. Kitts on Thursday, July 31st, 2025, at 10:00a.m. The Order Paper and other Papers will be issued at a later date.
