Justice Ministry Equips Crown Counsels with UN-Led Human Rights Training

In a step toward modernizing justice in St. Kitts and Nevis, the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), hosted a two-day training for Crown Counsels on July 24th and 25th. The workshop, held under the theme “International Standards and Best Practices on Human Rights in the Administration of Justice”, focused on strengthening the human rights knowledge of attorneys who handle both criminal and civil matters.

Led by regional OHCHR experts, the training tackled critical areas such as arrest and detention and safeguards, fair trial rights, prosecutorial responsibilities and ensuring justice access for vulnerable groups. Attorney General Garth Wilkin emphasized that improving the capacity of legal professional is essential to creating a justice system that is not only efficient but also respectful of human rights and the rule of law.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader justice reform agenda, which aims to reduce case backlogs and improve coordination across legal bodies, all while embedding human dignity into legal practice.
