What’s next for police officer Brent Edwards after he was sentenced to jail, in connection with the 2023 hit and run incident of an 80-year-old woman?
Here is a summary of what transpired: Mr. Edwards was recently sentenced to jail, during the criminal assizes for the Nevis High Court on Friday Dec. 13th. He was arrested and charged for the offence of failing to immediately stop at the scene of an accident.
On July 15th 2023, Florence Ella Merchant of Zion, was found seriously injured on the side of the road by a passerby, while walking on the side of the road, in the area of New River, Nevis. Subsequently, she succumbed to her injuries on July 17th 2023.
But what is next? The police has informed the VON NEWSLINE that Edwards is still an officer and is on suspension until he is afforded a disciplinary hearing. Presently, he is at His Majesty’s Prison (HMP).
Furthermore, Edwards will be allowed his period of appeal, which is 14 days from the date of the sentence (having been sentenced on Dec. 13th), and then a disciplinary hearing will be scheduled.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the police stated that Edwards declined to give a sample for a toxicology test. Does he have that right to refuse? He is afforded that right, according to lawmen but the court can draw an inference of guilt from his refusal.Edwards was sentenced to 3 and a half years in prison earlier this month.
