Premier Brantley speaks on NIA’s Hospital expansion project

The Alexandra Hospital expansion project remains a debatable topic, considering it has been almost eight years since the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) broke ground for construction which was (May 31st, 2017).

The multi-million dollar project was funded by the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF) and the NIA. It will see a new wing of more than 60,000 square feet added to the existing building, which will include a physiotherapy wing, pediatric isolation wing, laboratory wing, operating theatre and radiology wing.

Work was expected to resume in May 2024, but could not because of a number of factors which, according to Premier, the Hon. Mark Brantley, included: “pressing commitments” by the NIA (water drilling project, work at NEPAC) and the staging of Culturama 50. This he said, “caused a bit of a strain on the financial resources.” Another issue was finding local contractors to handle the technical work on the project. The Premier stated that the NIA engaged international partners, such as Taiwan.

When will work resume and is there a projected completion date? Mr. Brantley give this response to the VONNEWSLINE during his Jan. 28th press conference:
