The Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS) is the 2025 recipient of the Judith Towle Environmental Grant, administered by the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI).
The Judith A. Towle Environmental Studies Fund was established at CFVI in 2003 in recognition of the commitment of Judith Towle to increasing environmental awareness in the Caribbean. Annual grants are awarded for innovative solutions that address shared environmental concerns in the insular Caribbean.
NHCS said on social media, because of the grant, it “will be carrying out a shoreline restoration project at Gallows Bay throughout 2026.”
This project will focus on replanting coconut trees along the shoreline and planting red mangroves and native shrubs to help hold the sand in place, protect the coast from erosion and storm surge, and restore important habitats for fish, birds, and other wildlife.
NHCS added “once known for its coconut-lined beaches, Nevis lost much of this natural protection due to Lethal Yellowing Disease. This project is an important step toward restoring that landscape.”
