St. Kitts and Nevis’ long-discussed energy transition is now firmly underway, according to the Hon. Konris Maynard, Minister of Public Infrastructure, who told Parliament that decisive Cabinet action has shifted national energy policy from aspiration to execution.

Addressing the House, Minister Maynard noted that decades of dependence on imported fossil fuels left small island states vulnerable to price shocks and disruption. “The status quo was no longer acceptable,” he said.

Central to the transition is Cabinet approval of a national electric vehicle (EV) policy and action plan, designed to guide EV adoption, improve energy efficiency and cut emissions. Concessions for EVs and hybrid vehicles have also been approved, with details to be unveiled at a formal launch in January 2026 and implementation soon after. This will also take place:

Minister Maynard also pointed to geothermal development in Nevis as a transformational project, with drilling expected in 2026 and the potential to deliver 30–50 megawatts of renewable baseload power for the Federation.
